Domain Names
Have you ever heard the term “domain name”, but never really known what it was? Well, read on to learn more about it, and perhaps you might even get a few ideas!
Fundamentally, domain names are the pivotal element of the Internet. Without them, life would be extremely difficult when it comes to visiting websites and finding companies through search engines and the like.
You may have guessed it by now – a domain is the “address” that you type into the navigation bar within your Internet browser, in order to ultimately arrive at a particular website. Sometimes, the domain name for a particular company is very easy to guess; for example Corporation X may have the domain name: www.corporationx.com
However, in other instances, the domain may be a little bit more inconspicuous – such as in the following example, Corporation Y may have the domain name: www.corpy.net
This brings us to a very important idea. When choosing a domain name for your business – it would be wise to decide on something that is easily guessable by the general public. Amazingly, even with the power of Internet search technology – many Internet users will hazard a blind attempt at identifying a company’s website address, regardless of whether they have visited the site previously or not.
For that reason, and to maximize the amount of organic web traffic that your site receives, you should try to register the “most obvious” domain name for your company – assuming it is still available.
What If The Domain I Want Is Taken?
With millions upon millions of websites live on the Internet these days, it’s hardly surprising that people trying to register new domain names often become frustrated when their desired address has been snapped up by someone else.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do in this situation. Even in your own web experiences, you may have come across websites with “strange” endings – such as:
- .org
- .net
- .me
- .info
- .uk.com
…and so on. The great thing about these alternative endings is that even if your desired domain name is not available in the “.com” format, it may still be up for grabs at the domain registration company under one of the above extensions.
Hence, if “www.corporationx.com” was taken, you could possibly register “www.corporationx.net” instead – and use this for your website.
